Rare untouched example of a wooden toy Noah's ark, made in Germany around 1875, of the desirable "boat-bottom base" type and with a sliding side.

The ark is in original condition, including the paintwork, but grubby from generations in an attic. Sadly, Noah and his family - not to mention the myriad of animals - are damaged and depleted in number. The pictures show the 28 pairs and 19 singles which survive, in various states.

Such arks were produced as part of a widespread cottage industry and regarded today as a category of folk art in their own right.
