Large pair early 20th century African Benin tribal hardwood carved panels, c 1920. These are impressive and quality examples and the carving is very fine. They depict a ceremonial scene involving Obi (the King) and are some of the best I have seen in 30 years of collecting. There is an original makers label to the rear of one panel which although faded details the subject matter and states the name of the artist and that they were carved in Benin City (Nigeria). On the second panel this is just a fragment which has worn away but you can still make out some of the content. They are in good original condition and have aged well with good colour/patina. There is minor surface wear and age related cracking and warping to the wood, particularly to one panel but this is to be expected given the age of the items.
