Waterfall Antiques has dated this piece to the 1890s.
It was formerly used as a champagne remuage floorstanding rack for the fermentation process in the production of champagne. Rather than bent metal fixing brackets, this rack has robust blocks of solid mahogany hidden discretely behind, and is secured with solid brass plates already fitted. It is of real age, dating from c1890s or older, and has acquired a lived-in look of immense character and charm.
