Description

A striking ancient Haute Epoque bust of a bearded saint or secular figure, wearing a chequered gown. Dating from the 1400s, and carved in hard dense wood, the sculpture is Northern French or Flemish in origin. Rests of the original polychromy remain, while erosion to the back and damage to the shoulders are visible.

Provenance: From an old collection in Dijon,t he sculpture was acquired at auction, and for the sale was dated and authenticated for the auction house by Laurence Fligny, France's top expert and valuer for Haute Epoque medieval art and renaissance art.

The dimensions of the sculpture are 33 x 33 x 13 cm measured without the custom oak base, which adds another inch or so to each side.
