Handsome Antique English Burl Walnut and Brass Letter / Postal Scales

Description

A wonderful and unusual pair of desk-top letter scales by the creme de la creme of makers, Sampson Mordan & Co., London; the signature can be clearly seem.

The base and pans are an unusual oval shape, the right hand pan having all the postal rates engraved into it. The base has a quality cross-banding in coramandal wood, an interesting contrast to the rich Walnut.

There is a set of five solid brass weights ranging from 1/4 oz to 4 oz sitting in the circular opening at the front.

There is a small repair to the burr Walnut in front of the weights and some normal age hairlines to the coramandal cross-banding - both insignificant, but mentioned for accuracy. Excellent quality and condition, measuring 8 1/4" x 5 1/4" x 3 3/4" tall.
