Finely-made and Signed Madeiran Mid C19th Book-carrier in an Exotic Timber , Possibly Andaman Padauk.

19th century
Description

Finely-made and signed Madeiran mid C19th book-carrier in an exotic timber , possibly Andaman padauk.

High quality folding desk-top book-carrier or book-rack from Madeira , bearing the trade label of Augusto Cezar Ribeiro , Funchal. The fretted sides and back of removable and folding construction. The underside of the base lined with original marbled paper and bearing the original printed paper trade label .

As part of Portugal during this period, items of this type were produced by leading Madeiran cabinet-makers , mainly based in the capital of Funchal, for both domestic and export consumption.

The exotic timber used here is possibly Andaman padauk , a sub species of the rosewood genus or perhaps Gonçalo Alves . The choice is typical of the grade of material used by Portuguese cabinet-makers of the period , having all been imported from former colonies in Brazil and the trading of the Portuguese in the wider continents of Asia .

In excellent original condition with a rich surface patina and glowing colour

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
