Early Victorian Walnut Writing Table Druce & Co London

Description

-Welcome to Mersham Manor Antiques-

A superb quality early walnut Victorian writing table. Made by Druce & Co, London, in the 19th century.

c.1850.

Druce & Co were a company of upholsterers, cabinetmakers and secondhand furniture retailers being based in a premises in Baker Street, London established in the 1850's by Thomas Charles Druce and later taken over by his son until 1913, the company continuing throughout the Wars but suffering extensive damage by bombing in 1940.

This beautifully made desk has an inset red leather, gold-tooled writing surface to the top.

Of rectangular, rounded corner design, over two cock-beaded drawers, which are mahogany lined showing the quality of the table.

Inside the second drawer is the original paper Druce & Co label.

The walnut and the burr-walnut has a characterful rich colour and wonderful figuring to to the timbers.

The legs are particularly lovely and of an unusual and very stylish octagonal, tapering design, with scroll feet and the original brass castors.

In good antique condition, expected signs of age and use, minor historical knocks and bumps, mainly to the feet, minor veneer repairs.

Strong, solid and sturdy.

Height to underside of table where sitting-57.6cm.
