Black Forest Carved Bear Decanter Stand

A fine example of Black Forest carving, a bear carrying a tree stump designed to be a stand for a decanter and glasses. The bear is wonderfully worked and has a superb face and expression. There would have been a decanter in the tree stump on the bear's back and then the glasses would have hung in the branches and two would have been in his paws. The whole is in excellent condition with no breaks or repairs and has a good colour and patina. Interestingly the base was hollowed out for a musical mechanism but it was never fitted and covered over at the time. This is a great example of Black forest carving, in great condition and while lacking the decanter and glasses these could be easy replaced if required though he looks great without. C.1910.
