A charming Black Forest carved book slide, based around owls. A great example of Black Forest carving the owls in particular are wonderfully worked. The book slide is of typical design and is made, as much Black Forest carving is from linden wood. The base has a carving of rocks and foliage and the two ends have fine well carved perching owls which have a great depth and life to them. The owls are given further life by glass eyes which are original and different colours. one owl has orange eyes and one yellow. The whole is in excellent condition and has a particularly good colour and patina for Black Forest carving. A great piece full of charm. C.1900.
