Serpentine Antiques has dated this piece to the 1880s.
It was written in duplicate on the same sheet, with the two or more parts separated by cutting a jagged toothed line between each, so that the parts could later be refitted to confirm the authenticity of the document. Hence the term, "indenture." Each party of the deed would retain one part.
Handwritten in black ink on vellum, this indenture deals with a land an buildings transaction between John Johnson, the mortgagor, and three other parties, Richard Rose, Charles Wilkins and Robert Collins, the mortgagees, regarding a parcel of land in Wescott, part of Dorking in Surrey, for the princely sum of £250.00 consideration.
It bears the revenue and tax stamps, signatures and the personal wax seals of each party.
Professionally framed and mounted in a wood and gesso black and gilt frame, this is both an interesting piece of history, and a very decorative piece for the wall of any room.
Size-33 inches long by 27.5 inches high.
