19th Century English Victorian Framed Handwritten Indenture Made in 1873 in Dorking, Surrey.

19th century
Description

Written in 1873, this is a very interesting large English handwritten indenture, made in Dorking, Surrey, and later mounted framed and glazed.

Historically, an indenture is a written legal contract between parties often dealing with land transactions, indentured labour, and apprenticeships. It was written in duplicate on the same sheet, with the two parts separated by cutting a jagged toothed line between the two, so that the two parts could later be refitted to confirm the authenticity of the document. Hence the term, "indenture." Each party of the deed would retain one part.

Handwritten in brown ink on vellum, this indenture deals with a land transaction between John Truelove and John Johnson, regarding a parcel of land in Wescott, part of Dorking in Surrey.

It bears a plot plan of the land, as well as the revenue and tax stamps, signatures and wax seals.

Professionally framed and mounted in a wood and gesso black and gilt frame, this is both an interesting piece of history, and a very decorative piece for the wall of any room.

Size-33 inches long by 27.5 inches high.

Another indenture also mentioning John Johnson, mounted and framed in a matching frame, is also available.

In very good condition.
