Description

A beautiful serene antique 17th century Virgin and Child group. Dating from ca 1640, it is in the typical Flemish Mechelen style, sculpted either in Flanders, or possibly in Spain.

Known as "Poupées de Malines" – Dolls of Mechelen – or "Chuletas de Malinas," the figures have fine and soft features, large and smooth foreheads, almond-shaped eyes, thin eyebrows and a small mouth. The soft "V" folds in the clothing are typical. This is a rare opportunity to acquire such a piece

There are losses, notably the forearm of the virgin, one arm and hand of the Jesus child, as well as some damage and old cracks. The head of the Jesus child has been refixed. The artwork is now in stable condition.
