Hobson May Collection has dated this piece to the 1910s.
The layers, built up over many years, make the shells very heavy and can be difficult to date precisely. This antique clam shell, from a private collection, is in good condition. There are two minor chips to the edge, these do not detract from the decorative qualities of the shell (as can be seen in the photographs). The inside of the shell is lovely and smooth and has a good white colour. An interesting, unusual and decorative antique clam shell to enhance any design scheme.
