Georgian Needlework Sampler With Animals

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Prometheus Antiques

A very interesting example of Georgian silk needlework, with a large central floral motif and peripheral small images, name and date. The needlework has a border of forget-me-nots and the central image is a large spray of flowers including roses. The most interesting aspects of the needlework are the two animals in the top corners, a leopard and a squirrel both titled and very unsual to see on a needlework. The work is dated and named below the floral spray as ‘Maria Linley 1809’. The sampler is in the original carved and gilded frame in untouched condition. The work has faded quite a bit and has some discolouration but is fundamentally in good condition with no holes or losses, and so very unsual.
