Description

Fine pair of rare early C19th Regency period English alabaster obelisks.

Scarce pair of Regency period obelisks made from English alabaster and mounted upon black marble edged bases . The tapering shafts onto square block bases with finely carved and moulded details.

English alabaster quarried in Staffordshire ,Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire has been used by craftsmen since the medieval period to produce works of art . This vein of figured creamy alabaster used in these obelisks was almost certainly quarried at Tutbury , Staffordshire . Chatsworth House , Derbyshire, seat of the Devonshires , has carved Tutbury alabaster door-case surrounds on the second floor of the house. Whilst nearby Kedleston Hall has massive fluted Nottinghamshire alabaster classical columns flanking the Adam designed interior and also boasts fine carved Tutbury alabaster door surrounds ( see photographs ) .

In excellent original condition with no damage or repairs .
