Jaques 'In Statu Quo' Travelling Chess Set

1900 - 1920
Description

JAQUES OF LONDON: a good late 19th century "In Statu Quo" travelling CHESS SET in perfect working order.

This iconic design, patented by Jaques & Son, is of mahogany and features the full set of white and red-stained chess pieces which lock into the rosewood and boxwood board. When 'unlocked' the pieces can be moved; the mechanism locked again, and then closed at the hinges ~ thus allowing games to be partially played and kept until later. Fully signed to the leading edges. 9.5ins square when open; 9.5 x 4.75 x 2.5ins closed.

***John Jaques & Son was a well known maker of games particularly in the 19th century. Still manufacturing today, the company is famous for its fine Chess sets; card games (John Jaques invented "Happy Families" amongst other card games) and Croquet Sets.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
