A very unsual and exceptionally fine string or thread holder in turned lignum vitae, made in the shape of a barrrel. The barrel is made of solid turned lignum vitae and unscrews in the centre. The interior retains the original thread or string holder which has an ebony handle that forms the top of the barrel so the string or yarn could be spooled back. The thread is dispensed through the tap on the front of the barrel which is in gilt brass. A truly exceptional example of it''s type in great condition with a wonderful patina. C.1850.
