Rare Japanese Ivory Edo Period Manju Netsuke Depicting the Tea Ceremony ( Chanoyu )

Description

As part of our Japanese Works of art collection we are delighted to offer the first of two delightful Manju Netsuke's from the early 19th century ( Edo period ) circa 1820, this particular example is carved in exquisite detail with implements representing the Japanese tea ceremony, it carries the hidden message of kamawanu ( don't care! never mind! that's alright! ) amongst the implements are a tea bowl, feather brooms, bamboo flower vessel, kettle, portable hearth ( karma ), a kettle mat, a pair of iron rings to lift a metal kettle, a pair of chopsticks, tea scoop, tea container, metal tripod ( Gotoku ), an ash container and scoop and a Nyoi ( Buddhist sceptre ), the netsuke is further decorated with a character below a signature seal that we believe translates to "Gyoku" an Asakusa school artist, a fabulous addition to any Netsuke collection.
