Fine Early Sailor Shellwork Picture

A fine and unusually mounted shell picture. The picture is made of exotic shells placed in the shape of a star and the whole is mounted in an unusual and purpose made gilt frame. These items are said to have been made with shells collected by sailors and given as valentines to sweathearts. This example is most unusual because of the quality of the gilt frame it is mounted in. The whole is in untouched condition and has a great country house look, there has been some movement of the shells and the frame is quite knocked, but this all gives it a great shabby look. C.1840.
