A fine example of a William IV period sampler by Louisa Paling aged 12 years and dated 1836. The sampler has a strawberry border with central pagoda motif surrounded by animals, birds and flowers and unsually bee hives. The verse is taken from Proverbs and reads: ''Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman that feareth the lord she shall be praised'' The sampler in silk on linen has a good strong colour retention but does have a little damage on the very edges in places, this can be seen in the photos.
