19th Century American Tobacconist Advertising Figure

Description

A rare C19th American tobacconist advertising figure of large proportions, well carved and polychrome decorated, modelled as an African American, the head dress with a gilt band and tobacco leaves, wearing a large gilt beaded necklace and pendant, holding a roll of tobacco under his right arm; the tobacco leaf skirt with a large gilt beaded waist; his garters of similar form. Standing on a shaped plinth.

Excellent condition. Notes: originally smoking a pipe, but now lacking.
