The child’s needlework embroidery sampler was hand worked in Pulford School, near Chester, which was originally attached to the Westminster Estate. Young girls under the age of 12 were expected to show their needlework skills. Often worked in poor light, showing a variety of stitches, the sampler depicts a date, a religious prayer, flanked by birds and butterflies with a floral embroidered outer border on an imaginary chinoiserie scene (Chinese), which was fashionable at this time.

The sampler, which shows surprising craftsmanship and skills, for a young child, with light pastel colours, is completely original. The tapestry is mounted in a glass fronted gilt and rosewood frame for protection and preservation.

This sampler is in excellent original condition, with no significant signs of degradation or damage to the embroidered coloured wool. The colours are still present and have not faded having been housed in a glass-fronted frame. The glass frame is intact, with no cracks or damage. The glass fronted gilt and rosewood frame is also in very good condition, with nominal old use marks to the leading edges, but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The frame retains the original hanging chain and hooks and it is ready to be hung. There is later tape on the back to secure the backboards.
