Description

As part of our Japanese art collection we are delighted to offer this rare and exceptional quality one piece ivory carving of a pair of Sumo wrestlers(Rikishi), the artist has very cleverly captured the Sumo in a full contact grapple with the strands of the wrestlers loin cloths(Mawashi)flying in the air ,it appears that the wrestler in the foreground has a controlling grip on the other, and judging by the facial expression he is just about to be flung over the shoulder to certain defeat, the artist has drawn the group with an incredible amount of accuracy , picking out hair and facial details as well as the muscle definition and toe and finger nail accuracy, the attention to detail is fascinating,the group are stood on their original pierced hardwood stand which has been neatly drilled to enable the group to be safely secured with silver wires across their feet,under one of the feet is the signature that we translate to read Yoshirou.

The condition is lovely with just a couple of very light age hairlines and the later drilled support holes in the wooden base , a very rare subject one piece okimono .
