This is a superb quality antique Victorian mahogany butlers’ tray and stand, constructed by Turner Woodward & Co. of 36 John Dalton Street, Manchester circa 1870, in excellent original condition. This type of tray was used both on grand tours and campaigns, but also in wealthy houses for serving drinks. To the perimeter of the four-panelled flat tray, is a brass double-hinged oval gallery. The four-hinged sides can be raised to stop drinks sliding of the tray but also folded down to make a side table (and also allow it to be stored level when not in use). The tray sits on a mahogany-folding stand. What makes this an unusual and more rare example is the fact that hinged mahogany bars act as connecting stretchers. Other butler trays had fabric-webbed straps to the stands. The stand has a connecting stretcher below for added strength.

The tray features a rich red mahogany colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received. This truly is a very beautiful item with quality construction and is original throughout. It is rare to see one in such good condition.

Condition Report:

It is rare to see an example, which not only is in excellent condition but also is also completely original. The level of detail and craftsmanship displayed second to none. It is rare to see an example, which not only is in excellent condition but also completely original. There are no splits to the top either. There are nominal old use marks to the leading edges and French polish but nothing significant considering the age of the item and years of use. The wooden tray and stand are all sturdy. This item is solid in joint and ready to use.
