Set of Four Early Isle of Wight "Sand" Pictures

Description

A truly remarkable, early and rare composite group of four SAND PICTURES of locations around the Isle of Wight.

The detail of the work is astonishing with scenes that include: Carisbroke Castle; the church at Arreton and The Needles. All have detailed inscriptions written by hand and three are signed by Edward (Dore ?) and dated 1840.

*Each is also inscribed "Drawn with sand from Alum Bay. Alum Bay is on the west coast of the island, close to the Needles, and is famous for its multi-coloured sand cliffs. Making sand pictures was quiet a popular pastime in the Victorian era ~ this was called "marmotinto".
