Borough of Halifax: 1894

Description

A superb set of SEVEN solid brass BELL WEIGHTS for the Borough of Halifax all of which are dated.

This rare set of weights ranges from the smallest (1lb) to the largest ~ which is a massive 56lbs ~ each is individually engraved: "BOROUGH of HALIFAX" AND THE DATE: "1894". Each weight is also impressed with the official Excise stamp including "VR" and "ER", and various dates, when the weights would have been regularly checked for their accuracy.

** Such weights were used by Town and Borough officials to check that market traders were not "short-changing" customers. If a trader was found to be under-selling, the penalties were severe, including lengthy jail sentences.
