Description

As part of our oriental collection we are delighted to offer this magnificent Japanese ivory caparisoned elephant on stand , the majestic beast is bejewelled in a shibayama style decoration using a multitude of semi precious stones,coral and abalone shell,the side panniers are further decorated in high relief carving and shibayama detailing, he fits onto his original purpose made stand nicely carved with peonies and is signed to the belly in a red seal signature tablet by a well known Shibayama artist "JOGYOKU".

The condition is quite superb throughout with no damage to either the ivory or the base.

Elephants of this magnitude are increasingly scarce and rarely come onto the open market , for a recent sold example of similar proportions without a base see.
