Description

Late 19th.c Art Nouveau style wrought iron hanging sign c.1898. From the famous Russell Hotel, London. Double sided sign with elaborate scroll work and highly stylised typeface. Missing one letter and portions of two others on one side, the other side being complete.

The Russell hotel, Russell Square, Bloomsbury was built in 1898 and designed by Charles Fitzroy Doll. Its distinctive and elaborate façade features terracotta cladding, statues of British Queens above the door and the coats of arms of all the world’s nations at the time. The hotel’s restaurant is said to be identical to that of the Titanic which was also designed by Doll. The hotel suffered bomb damage in 1941 when it is believed this sign was removed.

Dimensions: width 26", height 33".
