Superb Quality Pierced Ivory Rat Ball Ojime "Masamitsu"

Description

As part of our oriental collection we are delighted to offer this wonderful quality Japanese ivory ball depicting a swarm of rats fighting over two lumps of cheese both of which carry the signatures of a leading Meiji period carver "MASAMITSU" ,the mellow honey coloured ivory rats each have jet inset eyes and varying facial expressions , the ball is completely hollowed out inside and has two concentric holes which would indicate it may have been used as a very large ojime bead or netsuke, whatever its purpose it is a fabulous tactile okimono.

The condition is superb with the exception of about three jet eye losses visible under a glass !
