Opus Antiques has dated this piece to the 19th Century.
When not in use the candle cups and sometimes also candle snuffers are unscrewed and stored in the bases which in turn screw together to get the Brighton Bun!!
This 19th century Brighton Bun is unusual having been made from mahogany the majority of wooden Brighton Buns were made from olive wood. It measures approximately 9.5cm in diameter when closed and has two candle cups which screw into the lid/base to gice two chambersticks.
