Unusual Mahogany Brighton Bun Travelling Candlesticks

Description

Brighton Buns are rather clever folding candlesticks used by explorers from the Canadian Frontier in the 18th century and in the 19th century by the military British senior army officers, and people travelling. They consist of two drip -pan bases with candle cups which screw in to the base to provide two chambersticks. When not in use the candle cups and sometimes also candle snuffers are unscrewed and stored in the bases which in turn screw together to get the Brighton Bun!!

This 19th century Brighton Bun is unusual having been made from mahogany the majority of wooden Brighton Buns were made from olive wood. It measures approximately 9.5cm in diameter when closed and has two candle cups which screw into the lid/base to gice two chambersticks.
