Michael Thonet is celebrated as a pioneer of both antique furniture design and manufacture. His invention of a technique for bending solid timber with steam enabled him to become the first industrialised producer of furniture of a mass scale. As well as the economies of scale which were achieved by the process it created an revolutionary simple and functionalist aesthetic much admired by the early modernist designers and still recognized as classic well over a century later.
