As part of our oriental collection we are delighted to offer this simply stunning Japanese shibayama decorated ivory tusk vase on stand , the first and smallest of two we are listing direct from a private collection in Shropshire, the tusk itself is smothered front and back with high quality shibayama style decoration, the front depicts a floral display in a vase upon a cinnabar lacquer stand , further decorated with birds and butterflies , the rear is unusually as good as the front, this time depicting a charming scene of a bird resting upon a lantern hanging in a prunus tree , once more surrounded by butterflies , the tusk is signed in a large mother of pearl tablet to the side , it is silver mounted to the base and stands upon a fine quality carved and pierced stand with a double height decorative undertier.

A superb piece of Japanese craftsmanship in wonderful condition !

Remarkably no losses to the hundreds of inlaid semi precious stones on this seriously chunky tusk section.
