Georgian Sampler Mary Commins in Original Rosewood Frame

Description

This is a lovely Georgian/William IV sampler by Mary Commins aged 11 dated 1831. The sampler has fine work throughout and great detail. There is a typical alphabet beneath the intertwined rose border and a three verse poem under this that reads.

"Like some fair tree which, fed by streams,

with timely fruit does bend,

He still shall flourish and success,

All his designs attend.

Ungodly men and their attempts,

No lasting root shall find,

Untimely blasted and dispersed,

Like chaff before the wind.

Reproach and grief have broke my heart,

I looked for some to take my part,

To pity or relieve my pain,

But looked, alas! for both in vain."

Beneath the verse there is a further floral band which appears to have a small repair under the right hand flower group, see photo 6. Otherwise this is in superb condition.

This is in super condition for its age and is in its original rosewood frame which measures 63 cms by 55 cms.
