Military Cross Recipient's Sword, WWI Artillery Officer

1900 - 1920
Description

The 1821 Pattern Artillery Officer's sword of Lt. Harold Campbell Ashenden, recipient of the Military Cross for service in World War One.

Ashenden was an officer of the Royal Field Artillery. His achievement, and that of all other servicemen awarded military honours in the Great War, was recorded in various supplements of the London Gazette published in September 1918.

Ashenden's entry reads "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Whilst the battery was retiring along a road crowded with transport of all kinds, hostile infantry brought machine-gun fire to bear on the column, causing considerable confusion. This officer, who was commanding the battery at the time, immediately extricated it from the press of the vehicles, and brought it into action in the open. He then collected some infantry to hold the line by the guns, and thus covered the retirement of the transport."

To find this entry for yourself, simply go to the London Gazette website, click "All Notices, click on text search on the left and enter "Harold Campbell Ashenden" and then open Supplement 30901.

The sword is in excellent condition throughout. The leather scabbard is in good original order. The fish skin grip is perfect and all of its wire binding remains intact. There is some very minor areas of rust pitting to the three-bar hilt, as you would expect from a steel-hilted sword. The original leather sword knot is present, as is the frog strap which Ashenden hand-wrote his name onto (see photo 4). The single fullered, spear-point blade is in good condition with virtually no pitting. The ricasso of the blade is etched with Ashenden's initials, and is stamped with a government proof mark. The blade also bears the cipher of George V.

Overall length 106cm. Blade length 89cm.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
