Pair of Meiji Period Japanese Eagle Shibayama Plaques in Lacquer Frames

Description

This is a stunning pair of Meiji Period Japanese Shibayama lacquered plaques with carved bone, ivory and mother of pearl in the forms of birds of prey, perched on branches and surrounded with scrolling acer branches and swallows. The plaques are in their original red lacquered, cherry-blossom frames, which are very typical of shibayama pieces of this period. These are in super condition, the birds have shimmering mother of pearl plumage which is particularly attractive. They are in excellent condition save for a couple of very minor cracks to the sides of the frames which are not noticeable. These beautiful plaques date from the late 19th century, and they measure 54cms by 42cms.
