A really charming and unusual Black Forest carving tobacco jar and pipe stand modeled as a dog with his paws on a wall. The carving is top level and the patina is unusually good. The dog has his paws on a wall looking over and in between are receptacles for ash, matches, and striking. The dog has a wonderful expression and retains the original glass eyes. The head lifts across the mouth to reveal the tobacco pot, which would probably have had a tin liner originally. The whole is in good country house condition, having the slight defect of a small split at the back. C.1890.
