Steve Sly Japanese Works of Art has dated this piece to the 1880s.
The subject matter is so realistic and depicts a large ape in the heat of battle against a very large eagle, the artist has caught the scene in a real life situation with feathers flying and landing on the apes head and back , the ape has his right hand on the eagles throat while the eagle has bedded his right talons firmly into the monkeys chest area ,its difficult to tell who will come out on top in this battle !!
The hardest subject for an artist to capture in ivory or bronze is a bird and in particular the feathers , many tried and failed to master the skill , this artist has captured everything in exquisite detail ,both creatures have mother of pearl inlaid eyes, another great sign are the monkeys fingernails which in a lesser quality piece would be hidden , the artist has shown off his skills to there full potential , just magnificent !!
