Description

As part of our oriental collection we are delighted to offer this superb quality Japanese Meiji period ivory basket with silver fittings and shibayama style flowers.

This simply gorgeous item is finished in a superb quality basket weave patterned carved ivory design, the solid silver base standing on three turned feet , the twisted silver loop handle finished in bamboo style and wired to the ivory body with decorative silver rope ties ,and best of all is the decorative shibayama fitted to the front and lid of the basket with carved ivory leaves and fabulous mother of pearl hydrangea flowers , simply gorgeous , the inside of the lid is signed on a gilt tablet .

The condition of the tusk basket is perfect with no cracks or damage , the hydrangea flowers have two minor losses , the top flower should join the front one on a stained ivory inset branch which is lacking , there are traces of over zealous glueing here and there and some staining from silver polish all of which should clean off.

But overall a fabulous piece of Japanese craftsmanship at its finest !!!
