A wonderfully charming and characterful carving of a dogs head and front paws, originally for use as an inkwell. The carving is superb and it has been given life by the addition of glass eyes. The carving opens to reveal where the inkwell would have been, which has been removed and the aperture has been lined with material for use as a trinket box. The carving is in exceptionally good untouched condition. C.1870.
