A George IV Gilt and Maple Mirror Sign C 1825-30

19th century
Description

A rare George IV maple framed and gilt mounted reverse mirror glass sign for the Tailors to the Royal Archers of Edinburgh

Size 41 inches wide 41 inches high to top of cresting.

This magnificent sign must have hung in a grand Edinburgh Tailors Shop. The Royal Archers were established in the 18th century and are the Monarchs official bodyguard in Scotland, attendant on their visits. George IV visited Scotland in 1822 when this tradition was established and this sign could well be associated with this occasion. Their headquarters are at Archers Hall in Buccleuch St a fine late 18th c Georgian building.

The original water gilding was overpainted with paint and we have restored the upper section of cresting with gold leaf. The glass maple frame and backing are in original condition.

We have our own van and can offer well priced deliveries to all parts of the UK including weekly deliveries to London and the Home Counties.

Please contact us by e mail or on our mobile 07768 606811 should you need any further information on this sign.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
