Victorian Needlework Picture Of Winter

A good Nineteenth Century Woolwork picture, depicting a Woodsman or Farmer, he is walking in winter pastures collecting fallen branches, which he has accumulated into a large bundle of firewood, he is dressed in traditional peasant garb with large winter overcoat. In the landscape background can be seen the farmhouse and the top of the church spire. The whole is worked in woollen threads and is on a linen backing, with the woodsmans face and hands in cut out printed silk a technique often emploey in the first half of the Nineteenth century. This type of figure is often seen in various forms in the Nineteenth century such as pottery, and prints and is allegorical for the season of Winter. The woolwork is mounted in it''s original frame, and is in good untouched condition, slightly faded and a tiny bit of degradation to the silk. C.1850
