Georgian Devon Silkwork Sampler by Jane Brooklin, C.1790

Description

Entitled ‘Mind Superior to the Body’ and incorporating verse, this silkwork sampler is signed ‘Jane Brooklin 26 March’ and ‘Worked at Miss Meluish’s School Newton Abbot’ having a floral and foliate border and featuring a number of different motifs, including flowers, trees, figures, birds (inc. peacocks), angels, huntsmen and children. This sampler dates to circa 1790 and as might be expected in one of this age, it does have some deterioration and discolouring, but it is a super piece and very attractive.
