During the nineteenth century, lead garden ornaments experienced a resurgence as Victorian landscapes drew inspiration from earlier English Renaissance and classical European gardens. Sculptures depicting putti, cherubs, and classical deities were cast to serve as focal points along garden paths, within alcoves, or atop stone pedestals.

Antique lead figures were typically cast using iron or timber internal armatures to support the soft metal weight. Molten lead was poured into multi-piece moulds, resulting in thick-walled, heavy structures capable of enduring exterior weathering without rusting.

Authentic pieces exhibit substantial weight, seam lines from historical casting processes, and a characteristic pale grey to white lead carbonate oxide layer formed over decades of atmospheric exposure. Soft metal wear, slight surface indentations, and detailed hand-chased surface work also indicate period manufacturing.

A lead putti figure can function as a focal point at the termination of a garden pathway, placed within a formal parterre, or nestled among structured greenery like box hedges. It can also serve as an elevated water basin or planter in a sunroom or courtyard garden.

Lead requires minimal intervention as its natural oxidisation protects the metal underneath. Avoid aggressive cleaning agents or abrasive brushing that strips the patina; gentle washing with water and soft brushes, along with periodic inspection of internal support armatures, preserves the sculpture.
