Antique Mount Fuji Damascene Inlaid Cigarette Case C1920

1900 - 1920
Description

A fine-quality, curved (chest-shaped) Damascene-inlaid cigarette case. The lid features a detailed Japanese landscape inlaid in gold-colored metal (frequently one finds 24k gold and silver inlay over iron or blackened steel), depicting a traditional watermill, thatched-roof houses, pine trees, a sailing boat on a lake or shore, and Mount Fuji in the background. The reverse features further inlay decoration, and the border is exquisite, with profuse detailing along the edges of both sides of the case. Original retaining bands to the interior and, surprisingly, no signature.

Date of Manufacture

Lee Sherman Antiques has dated this Japanese Damascene Cigarette Case to the 1920s.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1920s:
Articulated gilt retaining straps inside: typical cigarette case fittings of the 1920s.
Traditional nunome zogan gold inlay: finely worked export damascene of the period.
Gently curved body: designed to sit comfortably inside a gentleman's breast pocket.
Soft rubbing to the gilt edges: gentle wear from a century of handling.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Japanese Taisho period cigarette case is a damascene steel object styled with gold and silver inlay over blackened steel. The black and gold piece shows a detailed landscape depicting Mount Fuji, a waterwheel, thatched-roof houses, pine trees, pagodas, a sailing boat on a lake or shore, and a geometric border pattern along the edges. Additional features include original retaining bands to the interior, a curved chest-shaped profile, and an unsigned design. The case measures 8.2 cm high by 11 cm wide. Placed on an office desk in a gentleman's library, the cigarette case functions as a small decorative container. It rests securely on flat surfaces to hold cigarettes or small items while displaying the intricate traditional motifs.

Damascene metalwork, closely associated with the Komai family of Kyoto in Japan, is a technique where gold and silver wire or foil is chiseled into micro-grooves etched on an iron or steel surface. The background metal is chemically darkened or oxidised to produce a contrasting ground for detailed decorative scenes.

These cases are typically crafted with a steel or iron base, detailed with pure gold and silver wire inlay. The interior surfaces are frequently finished with polished brass or gilt coating to protect against rust and moisture.

Authentic pieces from the 1920s feature crisp, precise landscape or architectural inlay, smooth surface transitions between metals, and an even dark background. Many period items also contain stamped maker marks, seals, or workshop symbols on the interior frame or reverse.

Small decorative cases can be displayed flat or resting on a small easel atop an office desk, vanity tray, or bookshelf. They are also suitable for functional storage of small trinkets, business cards, or jewellery on a console table.

Wipe the surface gently with a soft, lint-free microfibre cloth to remove dust and oil. Avoid water, harsh chemical solvents, or metal polishes, as these can strip the dark oxidised background finish and loosen the delicate gold wire.
