FAQs

Musical trophies gained widespread popularity during the 18th century in France, particularly within the Louis XVI and Neoclassical periods. These carved decorative reliefs symbolised classical arts, poetry, and harmony, often featuring lyres, horns, sheet music, and ribbon swags.

Traditional giltwood carvings were sculpted from softwoods such as linden wood or pine, coated with layers of gesso plaster and clay bole, and then finished using water gilding with fine gold leaf to achieve a reflective surface.

Authentic period giltwood displays subtle tool marks from hand carving, natural wear exposing the red or yellow clay bole beneath the gilding, and signs of timber shrinkage or historic oxidisation on the reverse.

Giltwood appliques are effective when hung symmetrically, flanking a central mantle mirror, artwork, or positioned above a console table to add texture and sculptural interest to neutral wall spaces.

Care should be taken to dust giltwood gently using a dry, soft goat-hair brush or feather duster, avoiding liquids, damp cloths, or chemical solvents which can permanently dissolve water gilding and soft gesso.
