Maker named as successor to Dr Roberts: business traded in this form from 1835.
Old pre-decimal price 1/1 1/2 printed on the side: reflects period medicine duties.

This small Victorian apothecary jar dates from 1870. Made from earthenware with a white glaze, the cylindrical body has a flared rim and displays blue transfer-printed typography reading Prepared only by Beach & Barnicott Successors to the late Dr Roberts, Bridport. The piece measures 4 cm high, 5 cm wide, and 4 cm deep, sitting upright on a pale timber surface against a light background. In a modern home, this vessel is suited for display on a bookshelf alongside other small curiosities or collections. The glazed ceramic surface shows clean preservation with minimal signs of age, maintaining a bright overall appearance. The clear blue lettering remains entirely legible across the front of the pot, highlighting its pharmaceutical history from the nineteenth century.

In 19th-century Britain, ceramic ointment pots were utility containers used by chemists and apothecaries to dispense salves, ointments, and medical creams to customers.

These vessels were typically crafted from glazed earthenware or stoneware, featuring underglaze transfer-printed blue or black lettering to display the chemists branding.

Authentic pieces generally display faint surface crazing, slight irregularities in the transfer print, unglazed bases, and specific historical maker addresses rather than modern barcodes or marks.

Small ceramic apothecary pots work exceptionally well when grouped on bookshelves, arranged inside glass display cabinets, or set alongside bathroom accessories to create a curated, historical accent.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and mild detergent with a soft cloth, avoiding prolonged soaking or abrasive sponges that could damage glaze crazing or aged earthenware surfaces.
