Scratch Built Model of a Mail Coach

1900 - 1920
Description

An absolutely charming vintage scratch built model of a 19th century mail coach, complete with hinged doors and turning front axel. The coach is vividly decorated in red, yellow and black and inscribed ‘Chester’, ‘London’, ‘Holyhead’ and ‘Coventry’, with the VR symbol on the doors. A great decorative object.

I really like this - it’s just something that makes you smile! We estimate that it was made circa 1920.

Condition: The item has minor surface wear in accordance with age. The wheels are a little loose and don’t sit perfectly vertical, but this may just be the way it is. There appears to be a piece broken or missing on the back of the coach, but otherwise no losses or damage that I can see.

Dimensions:

Width - 35cm

Depth - 14.5cm

Height - 24cm

Free UK delivery - the item will be sent using a tracked and signed for service. If you would like a quote for delivery elsewhere please get in touch.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1920s:
Slotted screws on the undercarriage: standard early twentieth-century assembly.
Hand-shaped timber and fretwork wheels: amateur model-making of the interwar era.
Naturally oxidised paint and grime in recesses: decades of undisturbed show.
Hand-lettered coach routes and VR cipher: traditional folk art detailing.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This 1920 scratch-built decorative model of a 19th-century mail coach belongs to the Victorian style and is made from wood and metal with a painted finish. The body of the coach displays a striking combination of red, black, and yellow colours, complemented by hand-painted lettering that reads 'Chester', 'London', 'Holyhead', and 'Coventry', alongside the royal VR cypher on the doors. Visible details include spoked wheels, folding steps, hinged doors, a turning front axle, and small metal handles and brackets. The piece has minor surface wear consistent with age, slightly loose wheels that do not sit perfectly vertical, and a broken or missing section on the back. Measuring 24 cm high, 35 cm wide, and 14.5 cm deep, this item fits well on a bookshelf in a gentleman's library or study as an engaging conversation piece.

Scale model mail coaches represent the horse-drawn vehicles used by the Royal Mail and postal services across Great Britain during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to convey mail and passengers.

Scratch-built model carriages were typically constructed by hand using wood, brass, wire fittings, and layered painted finishes to replicate full-sized vehicles.

Authentic pieces often feature hand-cut joinery, bespoke hand-lettered livery, period-appropriate painted schemes, and natural surface wear consistent with age.

Models of this nature function as distinct accent objects when positioned on bookshelf displays, desk surfaces, or mantelpieces within traditional or eclectic interior schemes.

Keep the item in a stable climate away from direct heat and sunlight, dusting carefully with a soft dry brush to protect the underlying paintwork.
