18th Century French Mahogany Console Table

18th century
Description

An Exceptional 18th Century French Mahogany & Brass Console Table.

A particularly fine late 18th century French mahogany console table of elegant proportions and high quality.

The rectangular marble top is enclosed by a finely pierced brass gallery above a single frieze drawer, with shaped ends and extensive brass mouldings and detailing throughout. Raised on four finely fluted mahogany supports with unusually well-detailed brass capitals, collars and mounts, terminating in shaped legs with brass feet.

The quality and extent of the brass work sets this example apart from the more commonly encountered consoles of this type, with particularly fine detailing to the gallery, legs and feet.

There is a slight hairline crack in the marble that is barely visible and been there many, many years. It certainly never stopped us buying a table of this quality.

This 18th century French Louis XVI style console table is fashioned from warm brown mahogany with extensive brass mouldings, mounts, capitals, and collars. The rectangular marble top holds a finely pierced brass gallery rim, surmounting a single frieze drawer with curved ends, two drop handles, and a central keyhole escutcheon. Four fluted tapered supports hold up the structure above a lower tier shelf, terminating in shaped legs with detailed brass feet. The piece measures H 89 cm x W 129 cm x D 43 cm. Placed beside the front door, it provides a functional surface for keys and small items while adding a classical French chateau aesthetic to an entrance hall or living space.

Louis XVI furniture from the late 18th century is characterised by Neoclassical design principles, featuring straight geometric lines, fluted legs, refined timber veneers such as mahogany, and understated brass or gilt-bronze accents.

These tables were typically crafted from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over oak framing, often incorporating pierced brass galleries, brass mouldings, marble tops, and cast metal drawer pulls.

Authentic period tables demonstrate hand-cut dovetail drawer joinery, original hand-carved leg fluting, hand-chased brass hardware, and secondary woods like oak or pine visible on drawer linings and under-tier joinery.

A console table is ideal for entryways, hallway corridors, or behind a sofa, where it can be styled with modern artwork above and contemporary ceramics or table lamps on the upper surface.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax annually along the wood grain, while keeping brass mounts clean using dry dusting to preserve the aged surface patina.
