Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Maker stamp inside the lid reads Henry Troemner, Philadelphia: active from the mid-nineteenth century.
Gilt lettering and stencilled borders: typical American dry-goods store fitting before 1900.
Rolled wire rims and folded seams: standard nineteenth-century sheet-metal container construction.
Natural wear to the black japanned surface: decades of store use.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This large nineteenth-century American mercantile store bin comes from the workshop of Henry Troemner of Philadelphia. Made of tinplate with a black finish and gold decoration, the piece exhibits gilded typography reading Y. CORN MEAL on the roll-back slant front lid, hand-painted decorative borders, and an ornate monogram enclosed by a wreath motif on the front body. Surface wear, rubbing to the gilt, and minor paint loss are visible across the sheet metal structure, which also includes a small brass-coloured handle on the front edge and curved raised mouldings outlining the panels. Measuring 69 cm high, 51 cm wide, and 71 cm deep, the heavy container was originally used in a general store or trading post to hold bulk provisions. In a contemporary home, it functions well placed beside a fireplace hearth to store solid fuel such as coal or logs, or as a capacious storage container in a utility space or industrial loft interior.

Commercial toleware refers to heavy-duty painted or japanned tinplate containers manufactured for dry goods storage and merchandise display in nineteenth-century general stores.

These containers were typically fabricated from sheet iron or tinplate, finished with a dark japanned protective coating, and detailed with hand-painted gold leaf or gilt lettering.

Authentic period examples exhibit natural craquelure across the painted surface, wear to high-contact edges, hand-gilded typography, and occasionally maker marks or manufacturer stamps.

Large commercial store bins function effectively in modern utility spaces, country kitchens, or open-plan areas, serving as storage for firewood, umbrellas, or household textiles.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft dry cloth and avoid chemical cleansers or water immersion to prevent degradation of the historic paint and gilt embellishments.
