Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This two-tier Italian Florentine side table dates from 1930 and follows a French Chateau design vibe. Constructed from wood, gesso, and gold leaf, the piece displays a distressed finish in gold and ochre with visible wear and an aged patina. The rectangular table stands on cabriole legs and incorporates a scalloped apron, a decorative panel top surface, and a lower shelf. Surface wear, paint loss, and tarnished gilding reveal the underlying gesso and wood structure across the edges and surfaces. Measuring 65 cm high, 50 cm wide, and 50 cm deep, the table functions as an end table at the side of a sofa in a living room, drawing room, or hallway. The dual-tier format provides open surfaces for displaying decorative items, lamps, or books while occupying a compact footprint in an interior space.

FAQs

Italian Florentine furniture originated in Florence, Italy, taking inspiration from Renaissance and Rococo decorative arts, known for lightweight wooden construction finished with gilded gesso, scrollwork, and painted details.

These tables were typically crafted from softwood frame structures coated in gesso plaster, which was then layered with gold leaf or metallic pigment, antiqued, and finished with painted floral motifs.

Authentic pieces generally show subtle wear to the gilded layer revealing the reddish bole or white gesso beneath, alongside lightweight wood construction and hand-stamped or painted decorative borders.

Positioning as an occasional side table beside a simple sofa or modern armchair provides a gilded texture contrast against clean, contemporary upholstery.

Gilded surfaces should be dusted gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or camel-hair brush, avoiding water and solvent chemical cleaners which dissolve gold leaf and weaken underlying gesso.
